Exam Details

GAT-B (Graduate Aptitude Test - Biotechnology), previously it was Combined Entrance Examination for Biotechnology (CEEB) by JNU conducted by the Regional Centre for Biotechnology on behalf of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.  The candidates who clear sucessfully GAT-B may apply various DBT-supported PG programs in participating institutions.

Exam Detail

The examination will be conducted in a single shift for a duration of 180 minutes.

The Examinations will be conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.

The medium of Question Papers for both the examinations shall be English only.

The question paper will have two parts:

Part - A: Part A will have 60 compulsory multiple choice questions of the level of 10+2 in thesubjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. Each correct answer will be of one markeach. There will be negative marking and for each wrong answer, ½ (half) mark will be deducted.

Part - B: Part B will have multiple choice questions of bachelor’s level requiring thinking andanalysis. There will be questions from basic Biology, Life Sciences, Biotechnology and allied areas as per syllabus attached.

There will be 100 questions out of which the candidates will have toattempt 60 questions. Each correct answer will have a weightage of 3 marks.

There will be negativemarking and for each wrong answer one mark will be deducted.  Click here for more detail

Studentship Support

All students admitted under the DBT-supported programmes of any participating institution will be paid the stipend as under:

a) M.Sc. in Biotechnology & Allied Areas - Rs. 5,000/- per month

b) M.Sc. in Agricultural Biotechnology - Rs. 7,500/- per month

c) M.Tech./M.V.Sc. programmes - Rs. 12,000/- per month

The continuation of stipend for the second year of the program is subject to satisfactoryprogress of the student, to be certified by the participating institutions.

Test Practice Centres (TPCs)

 As per the guidelines of the Ministry of Education, NTA has set up, established andcreated a network of Test Practice Centres for candidates, especially in remote and ruralareas to enable them to practice and be comfortable in taking a Computer Based Test(CBT).

MVSc Animal Biotechnology: Candidate should hold BVSc. & AH. or equivalent Degree from a recognized university securing a minimum 60% in the traditional system.

In case of SC/ST candidates, the corresponding minimum requirements will 50%.

M.Sc. in Biotechnology: Candidate should hold a Bachelor’s Degree under regular pattern of education in Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Veterinary and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering/Technology, 4-years B.Sc. (Physician Assistant Course);


Medicine (MBBS)


BDS with at least 55% marks.

M.Sc. in Agri- Biotechnology: Candidate should hold a Bachelor’s Degree under  regular pattern of education with at least 55% marks or its equivalent grade point averagefrom any recognized university in the concerned subjects.

M.Tech. in Biotechnology: Candidate should hold a Bachelor's Degree with minimum 60% marks or equivalent CGPA (under grading system) from any recognized university.

Age Limit: Upto 28 years of age as on the last date of application for General& EWS category. Age relaxation of up to 5 years (33 years) for SC/ ST/Differently Abled/ Women candidates and upto 3 years (31 years) for OBC (NonCreamy Layer) candidates.


Entrance Examination Fee

The entrance examination fee is Rs. 1,000/- for general category candidates, OBC & EWScandidates.

Rs. 500/- for the candidates belonging to SC/ST and Person with Disability categories.

The entrance examinationfee for Foreign Nationals is US$ 40.00 or Rs. 2,880/-. 

Admission process

You can register for GAT-B from the official RCB website

Candidate should keep the following ready before filling of the online Application Form:

o A computer with proper internet connectivity

o The particulars of a valid Government ID proof

o The Date of Birth (as mentioned in Class X Board Certificate)

o Govt. Identity Details like Aadhar Number (last 4 digits) / Election Card (EPIC No.) / Passport number/Ration Card Number / Bank Account Number / PAN Number / Other valid Govt. IDs

o Educational Qualification details

o Actual category viz General (UR) / EWS / OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) / SC / ST, as the case may be, correctly mentioned in the relevant column

o Scanned clear passport photograph in JPG/JPEG format (size between 10 kb–200 kb) either in colour or black & white with 80% face (without mask) visible including ears against white background,

o Scanned clear signature in JPG/JPEG format (size between 4 kb–30 kb)

o Scanned class X or equivalent Certificate as a proof of Date of Birth

o Scanned copy of Certificate for Appearing/Result Awaiting Candidates

o Four (04) Cities of your Choice

o Bank account details for payment of fee

o A valid e-mail ID as important communications will be made in this e-mail ID

o A valid mobile number as important information via SMS will be sent to this number

Steps to be followed 

Register first by providing email-id and ph number (Login and passward will be sent to the register email and ph number).

Login with User id and Password.

Fill application form.

Upload documents as per asked

  • Recent passport size photography
  • Recent  scanned signature
  • Date of Birth Proof as per guidelines. Date of Birth Proof can be the DOB certificate in English or if in regional language then a declaration in English; SSC Certificate; PAN Card; Aadhar Card; Passport.
  • Qualifying Marks Certificate and Applicants appearing for Exam in 2020 have to upload scan copy of form in qualifying exam certificate duly filled and signed by HOD/HOI.

Pay application fee through Net Banking/Card Payment/UPI etc.


After successful submission of the application form download the Acknowledgement Receipt for any future communication.

Online Application Form cannot be withdrawn once it is submitted successfully.

Admit Card

Admit Card for the Examinations

The Admit Card will be issued provisionally to the candidates, subject to their satisfying the eligibility conditions.

The candidate has to download the Admit Card from the NTA website and appear for the Examination at the given Centre on Date, timing and examination as indicated in their Admit Card.

No candidate will be allowed to appear at the Examination centre, on Date and timing other than that allotted to them in their Admit Card.

In case candidates are unable to download Admit Cards from the website, they may approach the Help Line between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm or write to NTA at for GAT-B 2021 and BET 2021.
